Exhibition curated by Rian Kerrane

August 11 – September 30, 2012

Initiated by Rian Kerrane, a native of Ireland, Hybrid asks fourteen artists to “cross
over”. The artists’ work examines the experience of crossing
the Atlantic in the current political climate while acknowledging historic
influences from each artist’s perspective; identifying experiences of
(dis)placement and immersion in cultural and social surroundings from either
side of the Atlantic. RedLine provides the first venue for a pair of
exhibitions, the second of which will take place in Ireland, allowing each
artist to engage both with “local” proximity and “foreign” distance in turn.

The wide range of included media and the diverse origins of the
participants are intended to incite a stimulating translation and critical
examination of ongoing cultural conversations and personal experiences of the hybridization of our lives, expectations, ancestral backgrounds, geology,
perceptions, identities, of immigration, and of both the geographic distance
and human commonality of the artists.

Shaped by Kerrane’s personal ties with the included artists, Hybrid emerges from a reflective process
of curatorial matchmaking. Working in sculpture, painting, drawing,
photography, film and installation, the works of these two groups of artists
both mirror and confront one another. Hybrid
acknowledges and pays tribute to complex local experiences in a common global
culture, reflecting Kerrane’s eighteen years of continually (re)crossing the
Atlantic.

The seven artists from
Ireland are Lizzie Kinsella, Mark Joyce, James
Hayes, Sara Lewtas, Ian Gordon, Aisling O’ Beirn, and Deirdre O’ Mahony.Seven
Artists from the United States are Rian Kerrane, Eric Waldemar, Viviane
LeCourtois, Christopher R. Perez, Homare Ikeda, Lee Lee, and Melissa Borman.

Public Reception:March 17, 7-9pm

The RBC Wealth Management Art Collection includes over 400 works featuring the human figure. This collection demonstrates how the human figure informs our understanding the human condition. Since the earliest cave paintings to present day artistic expression, there has been a focus on the human form as a representation of daily life and aspirations. As the representation of the form evolved into both realistic and figurative depictions, the understandings within society have remained the same. The human figure has the ability to define and reflect upon the time. Participating artists include, but are not limited to, Chuck Close, Roland Fischer, Roy Lichtenstein, Vik Muniz, Hung Liu, and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith.

Artist Talk: February 17, 6-8pm

Known as the godfather of Chinese video art, WANG Gongxin's first solo exhibition in the United States will be on display at RedLine this January. WANG Gongxin is one of China’s earliest and most influential video artists and his innovative conceptual videos reveal a deeply personal critique of contemporary life in China today. Organized by the Asian Art Coordinating Council and curated by Dr. Julie Seagraves, this exhibitoin will feature four video installations by Wang - My Sun, Always Welcome, Forward, and It's About Ya. Ranging from 2-18 screens per piece, this vanguard exhibition will bring visitors through an immersive video experience that explores the artist's reflections on contemporary and past chinese culture. Seagraves explains, "Wang’s featured exhibit pieces are mid career examples as well as recent work. All are intense video installations, flawless in execution, and compelling in presentation. Each video installation has a different emotive quality, and the exhibit takes the viewer though a wide range of emotions. Although Wang’s videos are personal statements about China, in reality they deal with universal issues that all viewers can relate to and have their own personal interpretations."

In addition to the exhibition, RedLine & The Asian Art Coordinating Council will co-sponsor an artist talk with Wang on Friday, February 17th from 6-8pm. This event is free and open to the public.

The primary inspirational source and content of my artwork has centered around gift economies and the cultural and biological methods by which we regulate and maintain our social relationships. Exploring as direct, as intimate a relationship to audience members as I can, I create sculptural installations, conceptual performances and evolving relational projects. Often these include such elements as those of gender-specific experiences: hand-knitting and needlework techniques, arduously created and intended expressly for the dedication to a loved person. I also employ natural media, such as pheromones, heat and electricity, which are intended to enact human intimate association. My intent is to explore the unique resonance between organisms and the manners in which they embody the concepts of distribution and networks. The flavor of the work is often manipulative and sentimental.

* * *

Rebecca Vaughan has exhibited sculptural installations, mixed media relational and conceptual projects in the Colorado region, New York, Los Angeles, Mexico and Canada. Publications include the Chicago Art Journal and KnitKnit. Ms. Vaughan has also received state grants from the Colorado Council on the Arts and Humanities and the Ohio Arts Council. Her research centers on gift economies and the cultural and biological methods by which we regulate and maintain our social relationships. Her work explores the unique resonance between organisms and the manners in which they embody the concepts of distribution and networking. and unsettling world of complexities. Among the kitsch and banal I cram the
gross, grotesque, obnoxious and weird.

I am an opportunistic miner of "the cultural landfills". My imagery is a collision of sources, styles, and subjects that operate in an open-ended and non-linear construction of reality. Like the Internet and a good soap opera, there are numerous inlets and sub-narrative paths that intersect with a network of others. Crawling over, climbing out, hiding within, and digesting its surrounding; my work plays with image glut choc-full of cliché visual puns, and deadpan humor. I hope that this humor operates as a coping mechanism and ice breaker.

I work with readymade systems and personal narrative as a departure point. These structures provide me some parameters to start finding, hiding, and projecting imagery. I embrace spontaneity and let the work take on its own life remixing the boundaries of the pre-existing source. While I hide personal narratives within the work I am less interested in autobiography, and more so in the viewer recognizing their self within the complexity.

My
work explores the intersection between what is real and what is perceived. I am
constantly searching for spaces where this boundary has become visible and
through my work I try to examine this border. I am broadly influenced by the
history of depiction and illusionism in painting, stemming from my background
as an oil painter. The attempt to breach the physical world and move into a
utopian space of perfection and beauty has propelled my work from the beginning. I continue along this path using any medium and format at my disposal,
including video, installation and animation. I have found commonality in the
role of mathematics, proportion and viewer perception in each piece that I do. By simultaneously pulling the viewer into a work and pushing the process out
into the physical world, through painting, performance or motion, I hope to
negotiate a space somewhere in between.

Growing up on the U.S./Mexico border established my
wonderment of deceptively benign, nonsensical sayings. People
uttered little phrases in Spanish like “buscale tres patas de gato” (looking
for three cat legs). If someone was looking for
three cat legs it alluded to a person focusing on a portion of something, and not the whole, short sight vs.
foresight. This method of dialog made it possible
to discuss serious topics through a filter or a buffer. It became way of
creating a space between something complex
and transforming it into an experiential space. The artistic and social practices employed in the work are forged by this
allegorical approach to cultural issues. The
objects, digital drawings, and relational interactions exist as a venue for
exploring community exchange, coded
metaphors, and how the American Dream has changed over time. Some projects
are dependent and respond to peoples’ interactions
with the work, while others are explore material and iconography.

Initially, many of my projects begin as
drawings and experimentation. By utilizing the
process of drawing in traditional and non-traditional formats, I am able to map
out a trajectory of where the larger
interactive work may become. These minor works become the foundation of my
explorations. Graphic images from the media,
politics, snippets of film, and everyday occurrences act as metaphorical
indicators of the pulse of social culture. The work created strives to be open
and attempts to understand how objects and images are utilized within the
social constructs of power while trying to understand the horror and beauty of
the human experience in hope of creating a forum of communication and community
engagement.

Lanny Frances DeVuono

I have long been interested in nature imagery as some kind
of odd illustration of our own human nature. What we feel is limitless and expansive, we
want to own; where we find beauty, we try to ascribe purpose. Whether devastated from war, ecological
upheaval or simply our own use, the landscape maps our histories and hopes.

In this series, with a nod to the illusionary potential of
drawing itself, perspectives, near and far are deliberately skewed. Using landscapes as a foil, scenes of natural
beauty are juxtaposed against references to the environment.

Creating art has really opened me up to the world. It is what made me read books, listen to different music, look at politics, and just see things in a different way. It seems the more art I do, the more ideas and experiences I am exposed to. My process is a process of creation - I think of things, or stumble on things, and make things that I never thought could exist. Every time I speak to someone and divulge that I am an artist, I am immediately asked, “What kind of art do you do?” It is always a hard question for me to answer. I usually tell them, “Well I get an idea and I try to find the best way to work with it. It could be a sculpture, video, performance, installation, or a photograph. I guess you could call me a conceptualist.” That being said, the inspiration for my works and ideas are drawn from daily life. I do not feel obligated to one idea or theme, because I don’t think that’s the way life works.

RedLine is pleased to announce its annual
Resident Artist’s exhibition, Au:
Exchange. Cortney
Lane Stell, gallery director at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design will
curate the exhibition and symbolically transform RedLine through artist’s
creative engagement with precious commodities.
She explains:

This exhibition reconsiders gold, and the relationship of RedLine
artists with the material and the economy. Each resident artist was given a 2.5 gram gold bar to use in relation to the exhibition. Titled after the material’s relationship to
the concept, chemical element symbol for gold as a material and exchange
references organized markets, financial systems, and the exchange that happens
between artist and curator.

Eighteen RedLine artists will be exhibiting
in Au: Exchange and will present 18
individual testaments to the extraordinary relationship between artist and
funding, artist and material, and artist and value. The concepts touched on in this exhibition also reflect the plurality of concepts embedded in the material - from consumerism to identity. Participating resident
artist Conor King’s works explores the material properties of gold and its
correlation to photographic processes, he comments “The Au exhibition has inspired a work that repositions
my relationship to gold, one that originally rested in a conceptual realm of
economy and world markets into a more physical understanding of gold and its’
aesthetic value. In my work, I will explore the material properties of gold in
relation to photographic processes that deal with reflection and light.”

Artists:

Sonja Hinrichsen

Where
the Waters Meet explores the history of Denver’s two main water streams and the
city’s changing relationships to these two rivers throughout its existence
since 1858.

Denver
City and Auraria, the two settlements that were later united to become Denver,
were founded at the confluence of two rivers, the South Platte and the Cherry
Creek. This location had served as a campsite for the Arapahoe and Cheyenne
Indians for decades, as well as for early white travelers who came through this
country on their search for pelts and quest for freedom and discovery. A
French-Canadian trapper lived with a Native tribe in the present-day Denver
area for 7 years from 1815-22. In 1842 mapmaker and explorer John C. Fremont
came through the area.

While the
city founders chose this location explicitly for its water source, the rivers
also caused immense trouble for early Denver. People built houses and
businesses too close to the riverbanks and into their dry beds – coming from
the Eastern states they were not familiar with flashfloods.

Denverites
soon neglected and polluted the rivers – even more so in the 20th
century after Denver had secured other water resources from aquifers and by
channeling Colorado River water across the Continental Divide. What had once
been pleasant natural streams became stinking open sewers, their banks lined
with the refuse of an ever-growing city.

After
the flood of 1965 – the greatest in Denver’s history – the city’s attitude
towards its rivers slowly changed course. Debris was removed from the rivers,
former railroad and junkyards were developed into new neighborhoods, parks and
trails were created. The confluence has become a vital part of Denver life
again.

Where
the Waters Meet is an immersive installation with 5 video projections, sound
and narrative. The video projectors are placed so that the viewers’ shadows are
cast into the image, making them an actor in the installation and a player in
an environment that will likely be familiar to Denverites and inspire them to
reflect upon their city, while offering an overview of a part of Denver’s
history, also to those visiting from out of town.
