Transforming Milk into Milk

Transforming Milk Into Milk

Curated by Derrick Velasquez

September 2 - September 25, 2016

Reception: September 2, 2016, 6 - 9 p.m.

Transforming Milk Into Milk aims to present an anthology of contemporary artists who release the weighty constraints of a historical and magical transformation via artistic practice from one thing to another. This show is inspired by an photograph of artist and film-maker Harry Smith that was taken and notated by poet Allen Ginsberg. The quote states “Harry Smith, painter, architect, anthropologist, film-maker, and hermetic alchemist, his last week at Breslin Hotel Manhattan January 12, 1985 transforming milk into milk.”. The artists in this exhibition are complicit in flimsy ideas of a magical and alchemist-like change through art and aims to lift the veil from isolated artistic genius. The result can be equal to what is put in, milk into milk, with a subtle shift in context through making.

Participating Artists: Taylor Balkissoon, Kumasi J. Barnett, Justin Beard, Carlin Brown, Katrina Chamberlin, Adan De La Garza, Future Retrieval, Bean Gilsdorf, Rashawn Griffin, Amanda Martinez.
