Notes from a Peripatetic Collector: Selections from the Collection of Dr. Charles Hamlin

Sale proceeds to benefit the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth

November 14–December 7, 2026

Opening Reception: Friday, November 14, 6–8 pm

About the exhibition

The exhibition presents a selection of more than thirty photographs drawn from Dr. Hamlin’s lifelong dedication to collecting. If one word captures his approach, it is expansive—expansive in scope, thought, and in the embrace of media, theme, subject matter, and style.

The works on view span from the 1980s through the early 2000s. True to form, Dr. Hamlin never sought approval for his acquisitions but instead relied on a simple and abiding litmus test: whether a work elicited a genuine response.

This exhibition reflects not only his unerring eye, but also the joy of discovery and the continual search for the next meaningful piece.

Highlights include two of Colorado’s pioneering photography luminaries, dealer and photographer Hal Gould (1920–2015) and James O. Milmoe (1927–2022).

The breadth of the collection is equally expressed in its diverse processes and techniques from dye transfer, photo-montage, palladium print, long-exposure and motion studies to black-and-white gelatin silver prints and contemporary archival pigment prints.

Together, the photographs on display trace both the evolution of the medium and Dr. Hamlin’s expansive vision as a collector.

Photographs will be available to view online at TS Project Art starting November 14, 2025. Exhibition and sale to benefit the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.

About Dr. Hamlin

Dr. Hamlin has led a distinguished life dedicated to the practice of medicine as a renowned hand surgeon in Denver, while simultaneously cultivating a parallel identity as a passionate advocate for the arts.

His pursuit of visual art began during his years in clinical rotations at Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York, where frequent visits to galleries, museums, and artist studios provided a sustaining counterbalance to the long hours and rigors of medical training.

He often describes this formative period as the genesis of a six-decade—and continuing—love affair with the visual arts. Today, his approach to collecting remains guided by a discerning eye, shaped not only by aesthetic appeal but also by the humanitarian touch and the inherent emotive qualities expressed in each work of art.

Equally notable during Hamlin’s years of collecting has been his sustained commitment to Denver’s arts community, through support of organizations, galleries, museums, and artists across all disciplines.
