In 2020 and 2021, RedLine presents Afrofuturism + Beyond, a series of exhibitions and programs inspired by the cultural genre and art movement known as Afrofuturism, a term coined by Mark Dery in his 1994 essay “Black to the Future.”

Dery asked: “Can a community whose past has been deliberately rubbed out, and whose energies have subsequently been consumed by the search for legible traces in history, imagine possible futures?

In Afrofuturism, “Art is used to imagine counter-futures, free of Western, European dominance, but also as a tool to critique the status quo,” writes critic Jone Johnson Lewis.

“Through this imagination and creativity, a kind of truth about potential for a different future is brought forward to consider.”

With rich and expansive source material that ranges from ancient mythology, science fiction, astrophysics, and technology to social justice movements, indigenous ethics, and popular culture, the possibilities for exploring this genre are boundless.
