We love to see RedLine Resident Alumni flourishing!
Artnet, a leading online resource for the international art market and news, recently interviewed Resident Alumni Suchitra Mattai in her Los Angeles studio!
Suchitra is a Guyanese American artist of South Asian descent who embraces a multi-disciplinary approach. Her artistic expression is profoundly shaped by her experiences across different countries and cultural backgrounds.
With an MFA in painting and drawing and an MA in South Asian art from the University of Pennsylvania, she has showcased her work in various group exhibitions, notably at venues like MCA Chicago, Crystal Bridges Museum, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
At the core of Mattai’s creative pursuit is a fascination with memory and myth's capacity to reshape historical narratives. Mattai focuses on oral histories and family archives to amplify the voices of those historically silenced.
Often centering women's labor, she employs techniques associated with the domestic realm—such as embroidery and weaving—while also incorporating vintage materials to establish connections with past eras and makers.
Since her time at RedLine, Mattai has moved to Los Angeles to grow her practice. As you step into her L.A. studio—a realm of creative abundance housed within an old factory—you can feel the breathtaking view of palm trees and cityscapes framed by expansive windows.
Imagine bins overflowing with vibrant fabrics, paints, pearls, and threads—a true treasure trove of materials that fuels Mattai’s bold mixed-media artworks.
These pieces are a textured dance of stories, intertwining her Indo-Caribbean heritage with European landscapes, Indian miniature art, and a dash of personal history.
With her dedicated team by her side, they infuse the space with life, crafting, planning, and envisioning together. Amidst the captivating tools like the hand-built weaving frame and the unexpected automated dry-cleaning rack, Mattai’s art thrives.
