At RedLine, we pride our two-year Artist-in-Residency program for helping launch the careers of Denver’s incredible artists.
This August, we’re thrilled to share that Resident Alumni Sammy Seung-min Lee (Denver, CO) and Suchitra Mattai (Los Angeles, CA, have both been awarded the prestigious 2025 Joan Mitchell Fellowship!
What is the Joan Mitchell Fellowship?
Launched in 2021 by the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Fellowship provides $60,000 in unrestricted funding over five years, along with individualized professional development and peer-to-peer engagement.
Since 1993, the Foundation has supported more than 1,000 artists through grants, residencies, and related programs, continuing the legacy of hugely influential abstract painter Joan Mitchell (1925–1992).
The Joan Mitchell Fellowship is designed to nurture artists in the present, giving them time, space, and resources to grow. Fellows join a national cohort that fosters mutual support and visibility to open doors to exhibition opportunities, new residencies, and more.

For Lee and Mattai, this fellowship is both recognition of their artistic excellence, and an investment in their future. It celebrates the cultural importance of their work, while ensuring they have the freedom to continue exploring, experimenting, and expanding their practices.
RedLine’s Artist-In-Residency program provides emerging Colorado artists the platform to take bold steps in their creative journeys. Seeing alumni rise to the level of Joan Mitchell Fellows demonstrates how local investment in artists can ripple outward, shaping the cultural landscape on a much larger scale.
Congratulations again to Resident Alumni Sammy Seung-min Lee and Suchitra Mattai on this amazing achievement!
